Like many other Surrey schools, Miss T's school celebrated World Book Day today by asking the children to bring a favourite book with them to school and come dressed as that character. So we looked through the books and made a nice compact stack of maybe 35 favourites, which we then negotiated down to ten and eventually settled on a fine choice of the witch from Room on the Broom, Tilly from Tilly's Holiday, the Cat in the Hat or Stick Man.
Julia Donaldson books are a big hit in our house, so I wasn't surprised when she chose Stick Man. We went to work arranging her costume - when she first chose it, I had no idea how hard it would be to find a brown top... I trawled shopping centres and websites to no avail, I asked friends on facebook, and at the 11th hour, when my mother in law was about to use her nifty sewing skills to repurpose a blanket into a jumper, a neighbour came to the rescue with her son's brown top!
I also had a valueable lesson in using the sewing machine that I got over a year ago and had never quite managed to remove from the box! Cutting out felt leaves and giving them veins and attaching them to her clothes was fun and a lot easier than doing it by hand, and I can't wait to try my hand at sewing something else soon!
